The pilón was first used by the Taíno Indians to mash corn, spices, medicinal herbs and other things. Ingredients to make body paint were also processed in a pilón. With the introduction of the coffee bean into the Puerto RIcan culture, the pilón took an even more prominent place, used in the processing of the aromatic beans. Today, it is used mostly to make sofrito and to mix and mash garlic and spices.
Uses of a pilón . . .Needed to make authentic Mofongo; Ground coffee; Mash garlic and other spices; and to make cracker crumbs.
